History of town Zaostrog

During the history of town Zaostrog, in the middle age, on the hill Viter, the fortress Ostrog has been built, to provide the inhabitants the protection of the numerous attacks from the land and sea. Since, the first settlement has been developed arround the fortress, the town has got its name Zaostrog. In the history of town Zaostrog, during the rule of the ancient Illyrians and Romans, in this area, the rich urban and cultural life has taken the place. In the 15th century, from this casttle, the croatian aristocrats the brothers Vlatkovic-Jurjevic have ruled in this area. In the History Of Town Zaostrog already, in the 17th century, the inhabitants have started to come down toward the sea. After the eathquake in 1962. almost, all the inhabitants have mooved to the seaside, built the new houses and started to deal with the trade, transport and recently with tourism.
