Town Stobrec

The town of Stobrec is situated in a cove near the estuary of the River Zrnovnica. It had a turbulent history and it has been the ancient colony of the polis of Issa once. Nowadays, town Stobrec is a modern town that economically depends on traffic and tourism. Along with its surrounding area, Stobrec has a population of 4,000 and is expanding rapidly. History of town Stobrec

History of town Stobrec dates back to ancient history. In the 3rd century BC Greek colonists from the island of Issa (present-day Vis) founded their colony at the locality of today's Stobrec and named it Epetion. It was built on a cliff, which enabled its inhabitants to fight off attackers from sea and land, control maritime routes and improve their seamanship and, therefore, support the economy of the central polis of Issa. During the history of town Stobrec, the native Illyrian tribe, the Delmatae have frequently attacked town Epetion and its surrounding area. At the beginning of the new era, the Romans came and conquered the region and took control over the entire Dalmatia. They chose the town of Salona as the centre of their province, which ultimately caused the decline of the Issa polis. Because of its ties to Issa, Epetion suffered the same fate because the Romans have changed its name to Epetium and the colony lost its independent status and power In the history of toen Stobrec it has become a part of the municipality of Salona (ager). The town gradually evolved into a well-organised Roman town with all its proper functions, a large and sheltered port, and well-structured agricultural system in the nearby field. The remains of buildings and objects used for salt production and the fish cultivation in the River Zrnovnica, still exist. In the 7th century, the tribes of Slavs and Avars attacked the municipality of Salona, burned down its villages and, subsequently, destroyed the towns of Salona and Epetium. In the centuries to come, many rulers seized power over its area and, with time, Epetium lost its significance. Later in the history of town Stobrec, as a result, it became an urban settlement without any meaningful influence.

Because Town Stobrec is situated near the mouth of the Zrnovnica river, the beautiful sand beach has been built by its alluvial fans. The large camp Stobrec is nearby, so many campers can injoy the sweeming in the sea and the large forest. The Camp Stobrec has 400 camping sites, a room to eccept 1500 campers and covers 5 hectares. Camp Stobrec is famous for its long sand beach and the camping sites under the big trees. Many campers are coming here.
